Harper’s is pleased to announce Untitled, an exhibition of new work by artists Matthew Satz and Liliya Lifanova. This collaboration pairs one of the Hamptons' acclaimed artists (Satz), with one of its emerging talents (Lifanova).
Throughout her career, Liliya Lifanova has worked with materials and processes traditionally associated with the female. Inspired by the gesture of a woman taking off her stockings by rolling them down, Lifanova stretched and rolled a pair of pantyhose while forcing them onto boards. The performative act of rolling materials has become central to Lifanova’s current work. As color, texture, and pattern are accentuated and the newfound process becomes obscured, each new piece moves further into the abstract compelling a dynamic and intimate experience.
The work of Matthew Satz has been exhibited internationally, and his Smoke and Strip paintings have become veritable brands. Now in his mid-thirties, Satz is one of the leading artists based in the Hamptons. For Untitled, Satz presents a series of works on paper first produced in 2006. Originally realized as a group of studies for future Strip paintings, these gouaches examine his practice of extending painting beyond its traditional ground.
