Harper’s is pleased to return to EXPO Chicago with a solo exhibition of works by Brooklyn-based artist, Ricky Burrows. The presentation will feature new paintings by Burrows that draw from themes examined in his 2023 solo exhibition, Saved.
Within the featured works, Burrows paints figures and motifs that remark on his upbringing in New York City and Connecticut. The protagonists of this work tend to embody spiritual longing for other realities. Often based on people Burrows knows or influential artists in his life, within this series, Burrows captures extraordinary raw emotion among those surviving the fringes of society. For Burrows, the spectrum of experiences that comprise this state of precarity are landscapes in their own right—terrains that are porous and subject to slip in and out of stability at any given moment. Here, with his electric use of color and jarring iconography, Burrows continues to capture the temperamental and unsettling nature of human strife.
Ricky Burrows (b. 1995, Brooklyn, NY) is a self-taught artist who lives and works in Brooklyn. Most recently, his work has been exhibited at Harper’s, Los Angeles and New York (2024 and 2023); and One World Art Foundation, Bangkok (2024).
